Ciclovia

We are sad to say that Ciclovia is on hold for 2019. When we took over the event in 2018 we did it with the hope that we could grow it into an event that was in keeping with the spirit of a true Ciclovia. There are several reasons why this is not possible at this time, but the bottom line is that we want to do this event right. We want to be able to provide safe, fun and car-free streets that everyone can enjoy. This will take time and cooperation from numerous stakeholders, but we are focused on bringing back Ciclovia to Winnipeg in the future.

In the meantime we will still be hosting our annual Bike Week Celebration at The Forks, and we look forward to seeing thousands of Winnipeggers gathering together on Sunday, June 23 to celebrate everything there is love about cycling.

We appreciate your support and understanding!

In case you are unsure of exactly what “Ciclovia” is or what a true Ciclovia might look like you need look no further than Bogota Columbia. Ciclovia is a Spanish term that means “cycleway” (Here is how to pronounce it – https://forvo.com/word/ciclov%C3%ADa/) and  Bogotá started hosting their event back in 1974. It has grown into an event that includes over 100 kilometers of partially of fully closed streets every Sunday in the summer. The event has spawned numerous other Ciclovia events all over the world where bikes, runners, skaters, and other forms of self-propelled transportation take to the streets to enjoy a car free environment. While Bogota would be giant leap for Winnipeg, the theme and idea behind it is where we hope to go in the future.
